Food additives are substances added to preserve or improve the safety, freshness, taste, texture, or appearance of food. Some of these additives have been used for centuries for preservation—such as salt (to preserve meats such as bacon or dried fish), sugar (for jam), or sulfur dioxide (for wine).
The Use of Additives in the Modern Food Industry
The modern food industry makes extensive use of additives, for technological production reasons but also to "improve" the taste or appearance of food or to meet hygiene standards (preservatives).
These additives are generally subject to ongoing evaluation *to judge their effectiveness and safety, however, there is a lack of references to judge their long-term impact even at moderate doses.
(* at international level by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives -JECFA-, at European level by EFSA, at French level by ANSES).
Evolution of standards and restrictions of Additives
Many additives used over the past 40 years have been banned or restricted, but the list is likely to grow in the coming years.
Based on the assessments made, there is no risk linked to occasional or low consumption of additives, but for people who eat mainly ultra-processed products, this is a major concern and another good reason to consume minimally processed products!
The direct negative impact of additives concerns the intestinal flora, the importance of which is increasingly recognized: most of these substances disrupt the bacterial balance, with the cascade of discomfort and health impacts that can result.
Our commitment to additive-free products
For the manufacture of our products, we have excluded:
- Dyes
- Artificial flavors,
- Added sugars
- Magnesium stearate.
For capsules, additives are limited to their technological use to fluidify powders and obtain a precise dosage in each capsule. Apart from a few very specific exceptions with very small quantities of maltodextrin and silicon dioxide (Vegaflore, Pré Collagen), our formulas contain only additives of natural origin (rice bran, acacia fiber).
This is particularly the case with MULTIKID , unlike children's products which are frequently enriched with sugars and artificial flavors.
